What is a basket coin and how do faucet coins work?
A basket coin is a holder rewards coin that pays its holders in more than one token. On pump.fun, it uses its pump.fun trading and creator fees to buy its main pair and a rotating basket of the coins paired with that main pair, then distributes them to holders every 30 seconds. Owning one coin gives you the whole ecosystem. The engine that does this is called a faucet, which is why these are also called faucet coins.
The building blocks
The main pair
On pump.fun, a coin can trade against SOL or against another coin. When your coin trades against another coin, that coin is your main pair. It is the center of the ecosystem you want to grow. A faucet coin must be paired with a main coin, not SOL, because a SOL pair has no ecosystem of pair coins to reward.
The basket
The basket is a list of smaller coins that are also paired with your main pair. The creator picks them, and holders and other devs can suggest new pair coins on each faucet page for the creator to approve. Every basket coin must be paired with the main pair and buyable, so the basket always stays inside the same ecosystem.
The drip
Every 30 seconds the faucet claims trading and creator fees and makes one payout. Over time, 30% of rewards go to the main pair and 70% to the basket, one basket coin per drip, rotating through the list. Each drip is sent to qualifying holders weighted by how much they hold.
How a pump.fun faucet works, step by step
- Traders buy and sell the faucet coin on pump.fun, generating trading and creator fees.
- 100% of creator rewards are assigned to the faucet's rewards wallet.
- Every 30 seconds the bot claims fees and buys either the main pair or the next basket coin.
- The purchased coins are airdropped to holders who meet the USD minimum, weighted by holdings.
- Every payout is published on the faucet page with a Solscan link.
Holders can also pick which basket coins they want. Coins they skip are paid in the main pair instead, so nobody loses rewards by being selective.
The flywheel: small pairs lift the main pair
Here is the part most people miss. Every smaller pair trades against the main pair. That means every buy of a smaller pair is also demand for the main pair. When a faucet drips a basket coin, it is buying that coin, and buying it routes through the main pair.
Now add more faucets. When those smaller pairs run their own holder rewards faucets, their trading fees are used to buy even more of the main pair. Each faucet in the ecosystem becomes another buyer of the center coin.
- Faucet drips bring more holders to the small pairs.
- Trading in those small pairs buys the main pair.
- Small pair faucets buy even more of the main pair.
- The main pair grows in market cap, liquidity and number of holders.
- A bigger, more active main pair means bigger fees for every faucet in the ecosystem.
More holders on the smaller pairs means more market cap, more liquidity and wider ownership of the main pair, which lifts the whole coin ecosystem. As the founder puts it: if your coin already has a bunch of small pairs underneath it without much traction, a faucet is like lifting the house on stilts and building a skyscraper underneath it.
Who controls the basket, and why that matters
Pairing a new coin with your token does not get it into your faucet. It only makes the coin eligible to be considered. Nothing joins a basket without the creator approving it, and the creator can remove any coin at any time.
That control is what keeps a faucet honest. Without it, anyone could spin up a new coin paired with your token and push their own bag into your holders' wallets, leeching off rewards you funded. Because you approve each pair, the basket stays a list of coins you actually want to back. Community suggestions become a pipeline you filter, not a free for all, and some creators charge a review fee so only serious submissions come in.
Why holders like basket coins
- They never miss a launch. New pair coins added to the basket land in their wallet automatically.
- Diversification by default. One position earns many coins across the ecosystem.
- Conviction is rewarded. Payouts reward holding, not flipping.
Why creators like basket coins
Creators keep 25% of fees, sent automatically. More importantly, a basket coin gives their community a reason to stay and gives every dev in the ecosystem a reason to cooperate. Devs who launch pair coins want to be in the basket, so they promote the faucet. The basket grows with the community instead of against it.
